As business consultants, we work with clients on strategy, planning and problem solving, and help clients develop business skills and knowledge. These topics range from designing a business model or marketing plan, to determining which marketing techniques to use and how to use them.
A consultant may be hired to identify problems. Sometimes a business discovers it can save thousands of dollars a week by hiring consultants when they are needed rather than hiring full-time employees. They also can save additional money because they don't have to pay benefits to the consultants they hire.
As Consultants, we are paid to share our expertise and knowledge to help businesses attain goals and solve problems. Businesses often hire consultants to supplement their staff and save the costs of hiring a full-time employee. As a person new to the company or organization, consultants view the situation from a fresh perspective. Because a consultant isn't beholden to any particular corporate culture, co-worker scrutiny or morale, consultants can act as the catalyst for change.
While there are no degree requirements for a consultant, they do need to have vast knowledge and experience in a particular field. In addition to expertise, a consultant should have a track record of past accomplishments. Individuals with higher levels of education and experience will generally receive greater compensation for their services. Consulting is a broad area of interest and, from businesses to personal services, there's a consulting opportunity for practically every industry.
Job Duties of a Business Consultant
Job duties can vary depending on the industry in which a consultant is working and based on the specific field of expertise. Fixing or improving a particular component of client's business is the broadest duty for which consultants are hired. Consultants may sometimes be asked to teach a business' employees how to manipulate a new software program or some other skill that increases productivity or generates more revenue.
They're also expected to provide advice, make recommendations and excel at problem solving. Consultants are often used prior to, and during, the start-up of a new business or to re-energize a failing business. Consultants are also brought in when a business needs reorganization, including the termination of individual employees or entire departments. A client will retain a consultant's services until the goal or obligations of the particular endeavour have been met.
The time period for consultancy can vary in length, depending on the needs of the client and on any unforeseen problems or additions to the project for which the consultant was hired.
Successful consultants derive their skill set from a combination of learned techniques acquired from higher education and, to a lesser degree, innate personality traits. These skills include the following:
1. Logical reasoning
5. Ability to work well with others
Top 10 Reasons Organizations Hire a Consultant
- A consultant has the right expertise. This is where it pays not only to be really good in your chosen field, but also to have a track record that speaks for itself. For example, Riddle says he knows that every client who hired him did so partly on the basis of his track record.
- A consultant may be hired to identify problems. Sometimes employees are too close to a problem inside an organization to identify it, that’s when a consultant rides in on his or her white horse to save the day.
- A consultant can supplement the staff. Sometimes a business discovers it can save thousands of dollars a week by hiring consultants when they are needed rather than hiring full-time employees. They also can save additional money because they don't have to pay benefits to the consultants they hire. Even though a consultant's fees are generally higher than an employee's salary, over the long haul it makes good economic sense to hire a consultant.
- A consultant can act as a catalyst for change. No one likes change, especially corporate America. But sometimes change is needed, and a consultant may be brought in to implement the changes. A benefit to the company is that the consultant can do things without worrying about the corporate culture, employee morale, or other issues that get in the way when an organization is trying to institute change.
- A consultant provides much-needed objectivity. Who else is more qualified to identify a problem than a consultant? A good consultant provides an objective, fresh viewpoint without worrying about what people in the organization might think about the results and how they were achieved.
- A consultant may be hired to teach. Consultants are called on to teach many skills. Of course, it's the consultant's task to keep up with developments in their field of expertise so they're always ready to teach new clients what they need to stay competitive.
- A consultant by be hired to do the "dirty work." Let's face it: No one wants to be the person who has to make cuts in the staff or to eliminate an entire division. An impartial outside consultant is the perfect person to handle such unpleasant tasks.
- A consultant can bring new life to an organization. If you're good at coming up with ideas that work, then you won't have any trouble finding clients. At one time or another, most businesses need someone to administer "first aid" to get things rolling again.
- A consultant may be hired to create a new business. There are consultants who are experts in this discipline. But it does require special skill, so make sure you have it before you market yourself as a business development consultant.
- A consultant may be hired to influence other people. Do you like to hang out with the rich and famous in your town? If so, you may be hired to do a consulting job based on whom you know.

A membership in an organization allows people to subscribe, and often requires them to pay a membership fee or "subscription". Membership in an organizations typically have a particular purpose, which involves connecting people together around a particular profession, industry, activity, interest, mission or geographical location. This might simply be to encourage or facilitate interaction and collaboration, but it also often involves promoting and enhancing the purpose itself.
Membership vary in size from very small, voluntary associations, which may not be formally established, to very large nationally or internationally renowned organizations, like the aforementioned National Trust, which had 3.7 million members in 2010, each paying about £50 per year. Some of these membership organizations are referred to as multi-chapters if they have a main parent organization that is made up of chapters, clubs, or regions.

Affiliate marketing has grown quickly since its inception. The e-commerce website, viewed as a marketing toy in the early days of the Internet, became an integrated part of the overall business plan and in some cases grew to a bigger business than the existing offline business. According to one report, the total sales amount generated through affiliate networks in 2006 was £2.16 billion in the United Kingdom alone. The estimates were £1.35 billion in sales in 2005. Marketing Sherpa's research team estimated that, in 2006, affiliates worldwide earned US$6.5 billion in bounty and commissions from a variety of sources in retail, personal finance, gaming and gambling, travel, telecom, education, publishing, and forms of lead generation other than contextual advertising programs.
In 2006, the most active sectors for affiliate marketing were the adult gambling, retail industries and file-sharing services. The three sectors expected to experience the greatest growth are the mobile phone, finance, and travel sectors. Soon after these sectors came the entertainment (particularly gaming) and Internet-related services (particularly broadband) sectors. Also several of the affiliate solution providers expect to see increased interest from business-to-business marketers and advertisers in using affiliate marketing as part of their mix.Read More

Tip I: "There is a solution to every problem." (Sudhril Ruparelia. Founder and CEO Ruparelia Group)
Tip II: Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. (Arthur Ashe. Tennis player)
Tip III: Andrew Carnegie was once asked what he would do if everything he had achieved was taken away and this is what he said "I would make it back in 10 years." (Andrew Carnegie, Businessman and Entrepreneur)
Starting a business or managing one requires efficient problem solving techniques from management. The most successful business and corporate executives are required to be great problem solvers in order to enable smooth day to day business operations.
Entrepreneurs with great problem solving ability are always capable of solving business challenges both on the employee and client side. All businesses are about solutions to customer problems. If there are no problems there are no businesses. All businesses get problems on an everyday basis.
In order to handle problem solving efficiently I excerpted a formula from the book “The Power of Self Discipline” by Brian Tracy that will assist in creating a credible business problem solving strategy.
1. Take the time to define the problem clearly.
Many executives like to jump into solution mode immediately, even before they understand the issue. In some cases, a small problem can become a big one with inappropriate actions. In all cases, real clarity will expedite the path ahead.
2. Pursue alternate paths on "facts of life" and opportunities.
Remember, there are some things that you can do nothing about. They're not problems; they are merely facts of life. Often, what appears to be a problem is actually an opportunity in disguise.
3. Challenge the definition from all angles.
Beware of any problem for which there is only one definition. The more ways you can define a problem, the more likely it is that you will find the best solution. For example, "sales are too low" may mean strong competitors, ineffective advertising, or a poor sales process.
4. Iteratively question the cause of the problem.
This is all about finding the root cause, rather than treating a symptom. If you don't get to the root, the problem will likely recur, perhaps with different symptoms. Don't waste time re-solving the same problem.
5. Identify multiple possible solutions.
The more possible solutions you develop, the more likely you will come up with the right one. The quality of the solution seems to be in direct proportion to the quantity of solutions considered in problem solving.
6. Prioritize potential solutions.
An acceptable solution, doable now, is usually superior to an excellent solution with higher complexity, longer time-frame, and higher cost. There is a rule that says that every large problem was once a small problem that could have been solved easily at that time.
7. Make a decision. Select a solution, any solution, and then decide on a course of action.
The longer you put off deciding on what to do, the higher the cost, and the larger the impact. Your objective should be to deal with 80% of all problems immediately. At the very least, set a specific deadline for making a decision and stick to it.
8. Assign responsibility.
Who exactly is going to carry out the solution or the different elements of the solution? Otherwise nothing will happen, and you have no recourse but to implement all solutions yourself.
9. Set a measure for the solution.
Otherwise you will have no way of knowing when and whether the problem was solved. Problem solutions in a complex system often have unintended side effects which can be worse than the original problem.
People who are good at problem solving are some of the most valuable and respected people in every area. In fact, success is often defined as "the ability to solve problems." In many cultures, this is called "street smarts," and it's valued even more than "book smarts." The best entrepreneurs have both.Read More
